Since my return to England, I've unpacked quite a few boxes and suitcases that I left at my Mums. In one of these boxes of treasures were some old ads. Some roughs, some proofs and a few old laminates (does anybody laminate ads anymore?), Amongst them I found this. An ad that I wrote whilst on work experience from college at CDP (which at the time was one of the most creative agencies in the world). I was sitting in an office next to Tony Brignull and early one morning he popped his head around the door and asked if I’d like to work on a real brief. "Yeah!" I replied excitedly. So he gave me the brief - it was for an ad that was to run on the front page of the Morning Advertiser for the Whitbread Gold Cup. Anyway, after about half an hour I walked into his office and said "I've done it!". He turned and looked up at me and said, "You couldn't have done dear boy". He took the ad from my pental stained hand, looked at it and said "Ooh, that's rather good isn't it". He called the Account Service guy up, who promptly took the ad away and sold it. All those years of putting up with my Dad watching the horse racing, listening to bloody John McCririck and Brough Scott and waiting outside the Betting Shop for him had actually paid off.
